Cross
Country

Cross Country
This year's cross country team
finished in fourth place in the Sub-
urban League with a 5-3 record.
The team registered wins against
Cambridge Latin, Brookline,
Rindge Tech, Arlington, and a close
victory over Weymouth South.
Scores are determined by the first
five finishers from each team. The
team with the lowest score wins.
This year's seniors were Mike Hen-
ley, Russell Gardner, John Baker,
Tony Gaeta, Paul White, Tim
Walsh, Keary Naughton, and John
Cappazzoli. Mr. O'Leary and Mr.
Lyons, a student teacher, were
chiefly responsible for the teams
performance, practicing four or five
days a week to prepare for the
season.

Football

The 1971-72 football campaign,
started well and ended on a spar-
kling note for this year's Maroons.
The team began the season with a
well earned 18-0 victory over 1971
class A champ Lowell, and went out
in style with a 24-13 romp over
powerful Brockton. Wins over Wal-
tham and North Shore power Sal-
em gave the team an overall 4-5
record.

Juniors John Bouley and Steve
Antonowicz, seniors George Liset
and Dennis McLaughlin along with
co-captains Scott Berry and Dave
Totman contributed to the team's
success.

CHEERLEADERS

The Cheerleaders

In order to be a cheerleader, a girl
not only has to have athletic ability
and a loud, constant voice, but she
also has to maintain a good scholas-
tic standing. A lot of time must also
be spent in practicing. The high
points for this year s cheerleaders
were the Thanksgiving game at
Brockton and the Basketball State
Tournament. They also cheered at a
cross country meet in which Wey-
mouth North beat Weymouth
South by one point. For some extra
student support, the cheerleaders
also sold buttons and newspapers
featuring the sports teams.

Basketball

Weymouth North's Basketball
team coached by Mr. William
Reams achieved what four previ-
ous Weymouth teams had been
striving for: A berth in the State
Tournament. Finishing the season
with a 13-5 record, they qualified
for the tournament in an exciting
win at Brockton. Leading the team
were seniors: Dave Totman, Sub-
urban league allstar; Ron Crowley,
Brad Gregg; Pete Tileston and Jim
Cunningham. Aggressive team
play and defense were the keys to
North's success.

Hockey

Weymouth North's Hockey
Team, under the astute leadership
of first year Coach Arvidson and
his assistant Mr. Ghiorse, had an
exciting season. Overcoming non-
hockey injuries to Dick Kelley and
Bob Buckley, the team managed an
8-9-1 record. Leading the offense
were Dick Kelley and John Jeffer-
nan, each scoring "hat-tricks ". Co-
captains Steve Cappelini and "Bo"
O'Shaughnessy, along with senior
Bob Buckley controlled the team's
defense, a defense that produced
four shut-outs. Season's highlights
included a tie with league power,
Hingham and two important shut-
out victories against rival Wey-
mouth South.

WRESTLING

Wrestling

1972 was primarily a building
year for Weymouth North in
Wrestling. Composed mostly of
juniors and sophomores, the squad
won eight of sixteen matches. Sev-
en of the twelve starting varsity
were first year wrestlers. Watching
them wrestle one wouldn't know it.
The team gained respect from the
entire school. The co-captains were
Paul Gabriel and Scott Berry. After
an unfortunate injury to Scott, a
junior, Bob Donahue finished the
season as co-captain. The team has
eight of the twelve starters return-
ing next year to wrestle for Coach
Shores and his assistant, Mr.
Castignozzi.

Winter Track

This year the Winter Track team
ended the season with a record of 4-
3, good enough for a third place tie
with B.C. High. Coach O Leary and
Mr. Lyons worked hard with the
team to develop a winning competi-
tive spirit. Graduating seniors are
Mike Henley, John Baker, Dave
Tose, Russ Gardner, Steve Finlay-
son, Tony Gaeta, Tim Walsh, Paul
White, Wayne Gomer, Glen Hall,
George Liset, Dennis McLaughlyn,
Jim Pinsari, Tim O'Connor, and
Charlie Geffers.

Look out for splinters, Michael!

Boys Gymnastics
The Boys Gymnastics team, after
losing a considerable amount of tal-
ent to graduation, looked upon the
71-72 season as one of rebuilding.
The team, coached by Mr. Richard
Hayes and Mr. Joseph Mackey,
competed against many teams
whose gymnasts had been involved
in the sport all through secondary
school. Co-captained by Tom
Coyne and Fred Plett, North fin-
ished the season with four wins
and eight losses.

Girls' Gymnastics

Under the direction of Coach
Parker and Assistant Coach Corri-
gan, the Weymouth North Girls'
Gymnastics team has stretched and
tumbled through another winning
season. In spite of their limited
schedule of six meets, the girls
worked very hard to attain top
physical and mental condition es-
sential to gymnastic competition.
Completing the season with only
one loss to crosstown rival Wey-
mouth South, the team placed sec-
ond in the South League. Wey-
mouth North continues to be proud
of its girls.

The Political Affairs Club meets
on when there is something impor-
tant to discuss. It discusses civil
rights and is involved with the dif-
ferent strikes going on, such as the
migrant workers strike in Califor-

Society

National Honor Society
The National Honor Society

under the supervision of Mrs.
Howley and Mrs. Kalaijian is a
prestigious, nation-wide organiza-
tion into which students are in-
ducted on the basis of scholarship,
leadership, character, and service.
In the past, it has merely been an
honor to belong to the society. This
year, Weymouth North's chapter
became more active. The most not-
able event was the College Bowl
which took place on February
ninth. The officers for 1972 were
Peter Tileston, president; Ruth
Ryan, vice-president; Lorraine
Thornhill, secretary; and Debbie
Young, treasurer.

Journalism

Journalism Class

Every Friday, students, teachers,
and school personnel heard. Buy a
Journal. It's only 5c!

The selling of the paper, pro-
duced by the journalism class, was
the climax to a week of hard work.
Stories were written and copy read,
dummies typed, stenciled, and
completed with by-lines by
Thursday.

Miss Jones, the managing edi-
tor", censored all material for the
Journal. The two editors of each
page — news, editorial, feature,
sports — dealt out assignments and
prepared their page for press.

Keep at it. Kevin!

Camera Club

This year the Camera Club under
the direction of Miss Marinos has
had an active membership, enthu-
siastic about both the creative and
technical aspects of photography.
Individual projects included night
photography, portraits and nature.
The efforts of the club were shown
in April at a photography exhibit
held in the main lobbv.

Pep Club

So the saying goes "Behind every

V^IUU adage holds true for Weymouth

North. "Behind every team is the
Pep Club." Whenever you hear a
buzzer or a whistle you can also see
the Pep Club psyching the players
for a victory.

Under the direction of Miss
Arnold, Joan Howley, President;
Peter Tileston Vice-President;
Vicklyn Brunstrom Secretary; and
Ron Crowley Treasurer, the Pep

Yearbook

Yearbook
The yearbook staff of 1972 un-
der the direction of Mr. Egan and
Mr. Chop was made up of many
hard-working students. Members
of the literary staff spent the year
planning, writing, proofing, read-
ing, and typing; while the members
of the art staff planned designs and
layouts. The sales staff helped by
selling more books than was ex-
pected. This' also was a year for a
new dimension of color. The edi-
tors for 1972 were Linda Dentino,
Robyn Hamilton, Judy O'Connor,
and Ruth Ryan. Heading the art
staff were Jerel Scolamiero and
Brian Shebek.

Poem of the Peppermint Ponies

She smiles:

And at that moment

The world appears to be

A swirling, twirling carousel,

On which peppermint horses

Pace serenely through a marshmallow mist.

He winks:

And the splendor grows,

And the Royal coach glides near;

He holds her in his arms, gently,

And the peppermint steeds

Swiftly draw them through the ebony sky.

Floating

Over the air, soft

At first, then stronger,

An enchanting tune delights them;

The peppermint ponies know —

And carry their coach gently through the stars.

The tone

Of the tune deepens,

Crescendoes thund'ring

O'er the endless sky, smothering

Her tender words of love —

And the coach flies hurriedly by the moon.

Strangely

The marshmallow mist,

Ebony sky, and he

Enter the shadows of her mind —

And the carousel stops . . .

And the peppermint ponies are still . . .
